French is using different indefinite articles to talk about something indefinite or when a thing/person is unknown.

Singular Indefinite Articles

Rule 1: In singular, the French use the article un for a masculine noun and une for a feminine noun.

Plural Indefinite Article

Rule 2: Des is used for nouns in the plural form no matter the gender.

Indefinite Article and Negation

Rule 3: In a negative sentence, the indefinite articles un, une, des become ne … pas de.

Rule 4: If de is in front of a vowel or silent "h" it becomes d'.
